The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) collaborates with the Carnegie Corporation of New York to aid in fully funded scholarships to international students of undergraduates, Masters and PhD degree holders with an enthusiasm for information science and its related orders, (for example, Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, Cluster Analysis, Data Mining, Big information Analytics, Data Visualization, Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, Deep Active Learning, Cognitive Computing among others), to apply for one of six alluring grants at its spearheading Quantum Leap Africa (QLA) Research Center in Rwanda.

This Scholarship is targeted in reshaping Africa at the forefront of information science. Also, it will ensure that scientists worldwide are able to fully contribute to the above goal.

About

A graduate research scholarship is available for a highly talented PhD students who is technically skilled with a strong organic chemistry background. The successful students will work with a diverse group of researchers including chemists, pharmacologists and botanists. Background knowledge of inflammation including key biochemical processes and the role these play in initiation and progression of chronic disorders including Alzheimer’s disease is desirable. This project will involve comprehensive screening of Australian rainforest plants followed by the structural identification of the chemical constituents that can explain their therapeutic effects.

Scholarship Value

  • Domestic candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $30,000 per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs, supported by the Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset.
  • International candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $30,000 per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs. Those with a strong track record will be eligible for a tuition fee waiver.
  • Support for training, conference attendance, fieldwork and additional research costs as approved by the School.

Eligibility criteria

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds, who are keen to apply their skills to key issues in drug discovery. In particular, the project is suitable for candidates with strong interests organic chemistry, pharmacology/pharmaceutical science and natural products.
The successful applicant should:
  • hold qualifications and experience equal to one of the following (i) an Australian First Class Bachelor (Honours) degree, (ii) coursework Masters with at least 25% research component, (iii) Research Masters degree, or (iv) equivalent overseas qualifications.
  • demonstrate strong academic performance in subjects relevant to organic chemistry.
  • have an understanding of inflammation and its role in disease initiation and progression.
  • be willing to learn techniques applicable to molecular biology.
  • be enthusiastic and highly motivated to undertake further study at an advanced level.

Eligibility

  • The successful candidate will also have completed his/her Bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science, maths, physics, or a related field, with a high GPA. 
  • They will have either a masters or first class honors degree in a similar field.

Language Requirement

As an international student or researcher, you do not necessarily need to know Finnish or Swedish in order to be able to study in Finland. Many universities in Finland offers their programs in English which is widely spoken in academic circles and in the country as a whole. Cost of study and standard of living in Finland

Non-EU/EEA student interested to English-taught Master's degree program in Finland needs to complete a full degree at a Finnish institution, you will be required to pay tuition fees (app. 4 000 - 21 000 USD/year).

Finnish universities provide numerous scholarships for full tuition. Also, the Fulbright Finland Scholarship Awards are  funded in partnership with Finnish universities include a full tuition scholarship as part of the Fulbright grantee benefit package.

In Finland, Doctoral studies are free of charge, or degree courses offered in Finnish or Swedish. Also exchange students from other countries are not required to pay tuition fees.

Eligibility

The grantee’s Fulbright period in Finland can have one of the following purposes:

* Fulbright scholarship grant (monthly allowance) is awarded for one full academic year. However, in many cases Fulbright grant includes a full tuition waiver for the full Master's degree (2 years). How to Apply

The Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship Program is targeted on the U.S. side by the Institute of International Education (IIE), which controls all the stages of application process and pre-screens applicants.

Interested Candidates will apply either through a U.S. institution or At-Large. If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university, you are required to apply through that institution, even if you are not currently resident there. If you are not currently enrolled, you may apply through your alma mater, provided that the institution is willing and able to accommodate alumni applications. 

Centre for Development Research Merit Awards for PhD Students, 2019- DAAD

The MA in Development Studies is offered at the Institute of Social Development (ISD)at UWC. The course is designed for those planning a career in the field of economic and social development as policy-makers, activists, administrators, developers, researchers or teachers at universities. Annually about 50 students from 15-20 different countries register either for the Honours or Masters programme in Development Studies.


The MA in Development Studies starts every year. The next Call for scholarship applications for the intake 2020 will be open from 18th April to 30th June 2019.
Applicants with an excellent academic record (average upper second or first class grade) will have the opportunity to apply for a DAAD scholarship for their studies (see scholarship section for more information).

Practical Relevance
An important question from potential students and applicants is always: "What can I get as additional qualification from this MA Program?" The following aspects may give you an idea:
  • The teaching methods are designed to be as interactive as possible, emphasizing small group work and using relevant and practical case studies.
  • emphasis is placed on independent research
  • Since the 1980s close to 1000 students have completed post-graduate degrees with the ISD, many of whom are now in leading positions in the field of development in South Africa.

Requirements:
  • Applicants should be from Sub-Sahara Africa
  • Applicants should have an outstanding academic record - at least 70% average for your last degree
  • The study must have been completed at an internationally recognised university
  • The previous degree should have been an academic discipline which is related to Developement Studies
  • South African students are required to have an honours degree in order to be admitted to a Masters degree course. Ohter students need the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English, both written and spoken. This can be TOEFL test or a similar standard test or a letter from an academic institution
  • Work and/or voluntary experience in your field of interest would be a recommendation
  • There is no formal age restriction, but applicants should apply within three years of completing their previous degree, unless they have a good reason for having been academically inactive for a period
  • Women are encouraged to apply
  • South African students are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants must be able to study fulltime at the UWC for the required period.
  • Candidates for the MA and M Econ in Development Studies as well as PhD candidates can submit their scholarship application without needing to apply for admission at UWC. If they are awarded a scholarship, or if they intend to finance themselves, they may apply for admission through the online application procedure
